The Research Associate 1, SOM supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. The incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research. Core job functions include understanding and interpreting research protocols and procedures, participating in the publication of significant results, maintaining an overview of relevant research findings, ensuring all research is undertaken according to good research practice, keeping abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research, collecting, preparing, analyzing, dissecting, and evaluating specimens or tissue cultures, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, performing a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies, performing calculations to complete research test results, collecting data, and performing statistical analysis of laboratory results, and adhering to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguarding University assets. Department specific functions include performing specialized routine and diagnostic procedures in chemistry, hematology, and immunology using standard protocols involving ELISA, IFA, microscopy, serology, RIA, gel electrophoresis, chemistry and hematology analyzers, operating sensitive and complex laboratory equipment including maintenance and troubleshooting/minor repairs, accessioning and registering clinical specimens for all testing areas of the lab using a computer system, and assisting in client management including shipping of test supplies and new client communications/packages. The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, no prior experience, and skills such as attention to detail, ability to analyze and prioritize work under pressure, discretion in handling confidential information, ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary, commitment to the University’s core values, and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
